John D. Stephens where’s many hats ie.  composer, arranger, conductor, producer, and performer.  The legendary command of his woodwind instruments offers a broad range of musical styles to his ongoing musical offerings. Not only does he play alto, tenor, soprano, baritone saxophones, flute, clarinet, and bass clarinet, he is fluent in Finale Music Notation which compliments his stunning composing and arranging abilities.

Many musical genres like gospel, rhythm & blues, Latin, Zydeco, Texas and Mississippi delta blues, early rock & roll, and western swing have influenced Stephens' artistry.  Throughout his career, he toured with big bands such as William "Buddy" Collette, Benny Carter, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington. 

John is known for his upbeat, positive nature resulting in an extensive track record having graced stages with Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Cleo Laine, Aretha Franklin, Linda Hopkins, Maxine Weldon, Barbara Morrison, and more! 

“Songs & Tunes Of My Mentors", is a collection of my life’s projects! Songs were written by Buddy Collette, Gerald Wilson, Benny Carter, and Teddy Edwards! My ‘life’ project’ gives me a chance to show, giving thanks to all for their generous time of sharing their love!

“It’s You” is a sneak peek of what’s to come by year's end of a fully produced CD entitled “Songs, Tunes of My Mentors ” which includes: Ron Barrows, Curt Sletten, Jeff Kaye, Mike Nelson, Cindy Bradley, Dave Thomasson, Dennis Kaye, Les Benedict, Chris Johnson, Yuko Mabuchi, Greg Poree, Trevor Ware, Lance Kellogg! Other styles include Jazz, driving Swing, Ballad, Brazilian, Latin, Bluzzzy Big Band!

Having tapped every musical genre as he moved forward in his career, John is poised to continue lending his musical expertise to other artists who are looking to collaborate with a master of his craft.  As doors begin to open again for musical artists since the pandemic, John makes himself available for performances that will bring him through the doors of performing arts centers, high-end fundraisers, concert halls, and streaming events.

John Stephens Big Band will be performing at the iconic Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood, California on Wednesday, August 3rd, 2022 starting at 8:30PM PST. The evening is dedicated to the late saxophonist Buddy Collette’s birthday celebration and will feature James Janisse and vocalist Lynn Keller.
